Description
The inscription reads, “Morton
,
Minn.
, Birch Coulee Indian Battle Field Monuments” souvenir custard glass mug cup match holder 1890-1910. I’ve also heard them incorrectly called a toothpick holder although they could be used for that. On the bottom of the match holder, there are a series of raised circles molded into the glass covering the entire bottom. This rough surface provides a place to strike a match to light a pipe, cigar, cigarette, fireplace, cook stove. It is 2 1/4” tall x 1 3/4” diameter at the top. Dates to approximately 1890-1910. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs. The two, tall monuments, far left and far right, in the scene commemorate the battle of Birch Coulee which took place on September 2-3, 1862. One is for the Union forces and the other is for the Dakota Indians. The monuments were erected by the state in 1894. I suspect this glassware piece was made around that 1894 date.
