    Harry Northwood
    formed the Northwood Company in Indiana, Pennsylvania, in 1896. In 1901, unhappy with being a member of the National Glass Combine, Northwood leased his Indiana, Pennsylvania plant to his cousin Thomas Dugan, bought the old Hobbs, Brockunier plant in Wheeling, West Virginia, and was back to being happy as an independent producer. His old plant in Indiana, PA, became the Dugan Glass Company (later, the Diamond Glass Co.). Northwood was the only glass maker to use the Pie Crust Edge (PCE) on his bowls, and was about the only one to use an embossed trademark. Application of this trademark was an inconsistent process so that at best, only about 50% of Northwood's Carnival Glass received one. Don't depend solely on the presence of a trademark for authenticity; learn the patterns and the reproductions so that you don't pass over many wonderful pieces that aren't trademarked, or waste your money on a reproduction or fake.
    Custard Glass
    , which was introduced to America ca. 1895, was produced by most of the major glass makers. It derives its name from the custard-like color of the glass, ranging from yellow-green to ivory or milky white. Custard Glass contains Uranium Dioxide as a colorant, so it fluoresces under ultra-violet (black) light. Many pieces were decorated by "staining" with nutmeg (brown), blue, red, or green to accent the design. Others were painted with enamel, and/or accented with gilt. Some had all three enhancements.
    Excellent Antique Condition
    means that a
    listed
    item has no discernible post-production damage but may have one or more of the following issues related to the production methods and conditions in the early 1900s: air bubbles not squeezed out by hand-pressing; inclusions of ash or debris from dirty conditions;
    strands of undissolved colorant; lines called
    straw marks where molten glass was snipped with cool metal shears from the gathering rod, hardened immediately and mixed into the glass like dried paint; marks from shaping tools used to form the edge; mold issues such as incomplete or malformed edges,
    rough seams, extra glass at seams, webbed, incomplete or pulled edge points; cooling issues such as
    uneven legs or a bowed base causing rocking; heat checks which are internal separations from uneven cooling or burst air bubbles, etc. While these issues may be undesirable, they do not qualify as "damage".
    Combined Shipping
    is offered for both domestic and international shipment of multiple purchases. All items are bubble wrapped and cushioned with peanuts; no tape is used on the bubble wrap. Cartons are
    labeled GLASS or FRAGILE, and
    shipped in one business day; if I'm away then ASAP upon return.
