    Description

ARGONAUT SHELL REPRODUCTION. L. G. Wright Contemporary (1969) Custard Glass 5½" small Berry Bowl in excellent undamaged contemporary condition. This bowl bears the modified Northwood trademark called the "wobbly W". Rather than remove the original Northwood trademark from the Argonaut Shell moulds, L. G. Wright had a slanted line added to one leg of the Northwood 'N', thus forming a crude 'W'. Strong fluorescence under UV light.

    Modern Custard Glass
is decended from that which was introduced to America ca. 1895. Produced then by most of the major glass makers, it continued to be produced by the few glass makers that survived well into and beyond the 20th Century.  It derives its name from the custard-like color of the glass, ranging from yellow-green to ivory or milky white.  Custard Glass contains Uranium Dioxide as a colorant, so it fluoresces under ultra-violet (black) light.  Many pieces were decorated, back in the day, by "staining" with nutmeg (brown), blue, red, or green to accent the design. Others were painted with enamel, and/or accented with gilt. Some had all three enhancements.
    Contemporary Condition
refers to the lack of production issues which plagued antique glassware. Modern glassware is relatively free of those production issues due to modernized machinery, advances in glass making chemistry, and quality control. Even so, because modern Art Glass is generally still hand shaped, hand-painted and/or hand-iridized, each piece is technically a one-of-a-kind, and you may still find a minor production issue from time to time.
